Around the monumental specimen of Aleppo pine, it is possible to observe plant species such as phillyrea, strawberry tree, red juniper, mastic, broom, cistus, rosemary and prickly asparagus. This floral variety contributes to the stability of the dune ecosystem, offering refuge and nourishment to numerous animal species and promoting the conservation of the environmental balance. The presence of this very varied habitat not only enriches the natural landscape, but also represents a precious resource for botanical, faunal and environmental studies. Aware of the value of this natural heritage, the community of Palagiano, in collaboration with the Pro Loco and other institutions, is actively involved in the protection and enhancement of the area of ​​the Lenne Pine. Botanical trails have been created to guide visitors to discover the main Mediterranean essences, observation points to admire the local fauna and areas equipped for picnics that allow you to experience moments of relaxation immersed in nature. The trails are enriched by information signs that show images and descriptions of the plant and animal species present in the forest. It is possible to learn curiosities about the main aromatic plants, the typical shrubs of the Mediterranean scrub and the different fauna species that populate the area, including migratory birds, small mammals and reptiles. In addition to the information trails, spaces have been set up for observing the fauna and areas dedicated to outdoor workshops, aimed in particular at schools and families. During guided tours, experts illustrate the ecosystem of the reserve and the importance of environmental conservation, raising awareness among participants of the fundamental role that everyone can play in protecting the natural heritage. These initiatives aim to promote sustainable and conscious tourism capable of enhancing the beauty of the territory.

The production area extends along the Ionian coast of Taranto and includes several municipalities including Palagiano, Massafra, Ginosa, Castellaneta, Palagianello, Taranto and Statte. This area enjoys a particular microclimate which, combined with the quality of the soil, guarantees optimal growth of the plants and the production of superior quality fruit. The cultivation of clementines follows traditional agricultural practices integrated with modern and sustainable techniques, annual pruning and manual harvesting, which allows the integrity of the fruit to be preserved and guarantees its freshness. Furthermore, the selection and packaging phase is carried out with great attention to maintaining high quality standards. The history of the cultivation of clementines in Palagiano dates back to the early decades of the twentieth century, when local farmers understood the potential of this fruit and began to dedicate large agricultural areas to its production. The growing success has led to the recognition of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for the Clementines of the Gulf of Taranto, officially obtained on 22 September 2003 with EC Regulation no. 1665/2003, confirming the uniqueness and close connection between the product and its territory of origin. This recognition represented an important milestone for local producers and for the entire community, consolidating the position of Palagiano clementines on international markets and contributing significantly to the economy of the territory. Furthermore, on January 25, 2024, the Consortium for the Protection of IGP "Clementine del Golfo di Taranto" obtained official recognition through a Ministerial Decree, allowing the consortium to carry out activities of promotion, enhancement, surveillance and protection of the product. This important step has further strengthened the production chain, which involves hundreds of agricultural companies and cooperatives, offering numerous jobs and supporting the economic activities linked to the agri-food sector. In addition to their economic value, clementines are an integral part of the cultural identity of Palagiano and the surrounding municipalities. This bond is celebrated every year with the "Sagra del Mandarino", an event that attracts visitors from all over the region and represents an opportunity to promote not only the fruit, but also the local gastronomic and artisanal traditions. During the festival, the streets of the town come alive with tastings, shows, exhibitions and initiatives dedicated to the enhancement of the excellence of the area. Clementines are also protagonists in traditional cuisine, used to prepare desserts, liqueurs and typical dishes that enhance their aroma and sweetness. Environmental sustainability is a fundamental value for the producers of Palagiano, who adopt agricultural practices that respect the ecosystem and promote biodiversity within the citrus groves. The second week of October in Palagiano, the feast of the Madonna della Stella is celebrated, to which the “tagghiarìn asccquànd” festival is traditionally linked. It is in fact a celebration that, although it has a religious devotional meaning for the Madonna, carries with it a strong folkloristic and picturesque charge that makes the celebration unique in our territory, and of great attraction for the neighboring communities. The heart of the celebrations is the sanctuary of the same name in the open countryside where popular legend sets an event that would justify the birth of this dish that has now become a symbol of Palagiano. Tagliatelle with hot chili pepper would have been prepared by a mysterious woman who in the mists of time welcomed fishermen who had escaped a shipwreck into her humble home; that very spicy meal would have warmed and comforted the men rescued. As a sign of gratitude and devotion, the sanctuary dedicated to the Morning Star was built in that place, the star that guided the sailors to land on the coast, the one that guided the farmers' work and to which they turned with prayers and songs to have good harvests. The first days of October begin, therefore, with the almost nocturnal call of the Fisckarùl (low music), the morning processions, the novena and the rosaries in honor of the Madonna. It is on Saturday afternoon that the most festive and characteristic moment takes place in front of the Marian sanctuary, bringing together hundreds and hundreds of devotees for the pasta ritual. The surrounding countryside is bathed in the intense scent of the spicy sauce that cooks in large pots and that will season kilos and kilos of fettuccine to be distributed to the population after the blessing. On April 4, 1971, with the opening of the current church of San Nicola to worship, the feast of the bishop of Mitra was established on the second Sunday of May, which has been enriched year after year with religious content, bringing awareness of the miracles performed by the Saint. The village festival was therefore born according to a fairly simple scheme of two days of illuminations, a Sunday procession and a final fireworks display. In 2000, on the occasion of the Jubilee, a tradition began that today represents an important characteristic of the feast of San Nicola in our country: the Historical Procession of the “CARAVELLA”. The project, desired and created by the parish priest Don Giuseppe Maraglino and the San Nicola Committee, was coordinated by the then president Cosimo Alemanno who, with his mastery as a carpenter, and with the help of Gerardo Tautonico, planed, shaped, glued and painted the material recovered by the boys of the parish and brought to the laboratory. From the great teamwork that involved all the parishioners, not only the Caravel was created, but other accessories complementary to the scenography that characterize the procession including the spectacular historical costumes that over two hundred participants wear, immersing those who witness their passage in an atmosphere of other times that excites and brings to life the story of the translation of the bones of the Saint from Mira to Bari. From that moment on, on Saturday afternoon, the effigy of the Saint, represented by a painting, goes around the streets of the town on the Caravel pulled by young men dressed as sailors and preceded by the historical procession in which the most famous miracles of the Saint are represented, that of the Virgins, that of the three resurrected children and that of the young Adeodato. The procession ends in the church square with the distribution of blessed sandwiches. Sunday evening, as usual, is reserved for the solemn mass followed by the gala procession that accompanies the statue of San Nicola to the sound of prayers, hymns and musical marches.

 

San Rocco is highly venerated by the people of Puglia and there are numerous celebrations in his honor from 16 to 19 August. He is usually depicted as a young pilgrim pointing to a bare and wounded leg; next to him stands the dog of Gottardo with a loaf of bread in his mouth. We know of the charitable events linked to the life of the saint who, by stripping himself of all his riches and giving them to the poor and needy, and putting his life at the service of the sick and the destitute, followed the example of Saint Francis in a period in which, we are at the beginning of 1300, our land where he was a pilgrim was struck by the scourge of the plague. His lifestyle and the sudden healings he performed earned him recognition of his sanctity.
